Creating a mobile library website

I don't know how many of you know that we have a mobile library website here at Kent State. If you don't, I'm not suprised.... it's kinda crappy. As of right now it has the "Ask a Librarian" function, which I'll admit is pretty cool (you can text a question to the reference desk and they'll text back with an answer), a building guide for the library (helpful), hours (helpful) and a link to the full site (k), and ... that's it.

A linkable number, 2 PDFs and a web link. This does not make a good mobile site. Or am I wrong? The Swiss Army Librarian has an awesome article about making good, informative, usable mobile library websites and he doesn't have much of anything else except actually being able to search the catalog. I think that's a pretty important part though.

What would you want on a mobile site for lbraries?

College students are stupid

They really can be, especially when it comes to their beloved Facebook. Now, don't get me wrong, I spend my fair share of time on Facebook. I interact with friends and family; the student club I advise probably wouldn't exist without their Facebook page, the event invitation is practically an invaluable tools for anyone under the age to 30, and I've even been known to play a game or two.

But falling for these stupid scams, and putting the entire rest of a network at risk, is just plain..... well, stupid.

Installing the Kent State VPN

This was a video I made for my podcasting class. I know, video in a podcasting class. I think the idea was that this would be part of a vodcast, or really just creating stuff for use in a classroom setting.

The video is about how to install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your home computer if you are a student at Kent State University.
